Verdict:

This film captures exceptional atmosphere. There is a lot of detail in set design. Shots pan around the rooms to show them being absolutely filled with stuff. The towns look real and lively. Silence and extended close-ups are used to build tension scene by scene. This is a film where a fly is such an integral part of a scene that it could be considered a character. It would be fair to say that atmosphere is this film’s most distinguishing feature. Some say Sergio Leone spend a bit too much time on it, as the opening scene alone takes about 10 minutes, most of which is atmosphere and tension building.
The film is supported by a smart screenplay. At one point, the character Cheyenne raises his hands to drink from a bottle, thereby revealing that his hands are in handcuffs. That’s a smart little gem.
Ennio Morricone is responsible for the music, as with most Sergio Leone’s Westerns. He brings a good variety of noticeable tunes. There are emotional strings mixed with a choir or a female solo, and of course the iconic dramatic harmonica theme for the main protagonist that gets mixed with a menacing guitar. The music is a character in itself.
Jason Robards steals the show as a gang leader. He somehow manages to make a murdering criminal charismatic. The main villain played by Henry Fonda is well acted but is a little plain. The main protagonist is a bit corny. His signature harmonica is cool but then he plays that same tune in situations that do not call for it. And of course he talks with the rim of his hat covering his eyes to appear more mysterious. And of course he shoots flawlessly. The female protagonist is played by the gorgeous Claudia Cardinale. You can read a lot from her subtle facial expressions. Unfortunately, she is clearly dubbed, because people found her voice to be too hoarse.
That’s ok though, as the characters do not speak much anyway. This film consists primarily of expressive eyes, long pauses, and dramatic music. The conversations are very to the point.
This Sergio Leone’s film is memorable, with many interesting characters, unique musical score and good tension.
